The Heavy Debuts with Great Vengeance and Furious Fire

This week there are a lot of great releases. So keep checking back to get your fill of whats new and most importantly great by my standards! But kicking it off; it’s:

The Heavy - Great Vengeance and Furious Fire

The Heavy – Great Vengeance & Furious Fire

Track Listing
1. Brukpocket’s Lament
2. Colleen
3. Set Me Free
4. That Kind Of Man
5. Doing
6. Dignity
7. Our Special Place
8. Girl
9. In The Morning
10. Who Needs The Sunshine?

The Heavy is pretty brilliant. It brings back a time when music was fun, smart and true at the same time. Great Vengeance and Furious Fire is their debut album from Counter Records. Simply put: it is vintage sounding. It’s like you just uncovered your favorite soul/funk album from your basement. So you play the scratchy vinyl but those darn kids outside are blasting that darn hip/hop. The Heavy is that infusion of new and hip with the retro, classic and necessary beats and soul. Favorite tracks: “Brukpocket’s Lament”, “Colleen”, “Dignity”, and “That Kind Of Man.”

Born Ruffians, You make me Red, Yellow but mostly Blue.

Born Ruffians - Red, Yellow & Blue

Track Listing for Born Ruffians’ Red, Yellow & Blue:
1. Red, Yellow And Blue
2. Barnacle Goose
3. Hummingbird
4. I Need a Life
5. Little Garcon
6. Baddnkadonkey
7. Foxes Mate For Life
8. Hedonistic Me
9. In a Mirror
10. Kurt Vonnegut
11. Red Elephant

Self proclaimed as “Hootin’ & Hollarin’”, I am in no position to disagree. It’s “quirky” with strange time signatures, but overall, the current indie pop music. His voice is unique but don’t let that be a turn off. Biggest, and saddest comparison is to Vampire Weekend. If you didn’t know individual songs by the bands, you wouldn’t be that far off to confuse the two bands.

Another interesting fact, is that this is their second full release album and they put one of the songs from their first album on it. That song being Hedonistic Me. Which is an interesting choice to double that one up because, that was their single. I don’t know. If I put out a second album, I’d put out a full, entirely NEW album. That’s just me. The album is in store now off of Warp records.

Born Ruffians – Hummingbirds (Vampire Weekend Sound-A-Like)

Born Ruffians – Foxes Mate For Life (A more unique sound)

Later, Lube.

BuddyLube Departure

Bye Bye, Buddylube! Yesterday, I resigned from being “Facebook Expert” at a Digital Marketing Agency. I worked at BuddyLube for over a year which is a long time for a start-up. I grew up a lot, I worked a lot, I had fun. But since BuddyLube hit a rough patch, I realized the fun and enjoyment I got from going into the office turned into dread. No one wants to dread a job. And no one wants to commute 2 hours to go to a job they dread.

So, peace out, BL. It’s been real. For those who are unfamiliar with me… I don’t quit things. But it was my time, and I did. So this was quite exciting! Hooray!

Anywho.. Who wants to give me a job?

11.    Twenty Eight

WHY? Just released Alopecia (off of Anticon). It’s already been suggested as being a top album of 2008. Keep in mind, it’s March. Best way to describe it: Jangle-Rap and indie Pop. The lyrics are sung through speaking. Yoni Wolf’s has a dry sense of humor and solid rhymes which is translated well with the help of their strange choice of “instruments”. My favorite song, and best example is  “The Vowels Pt. 2” they use a chain beating, the floor or something. It steady, strong and unique. All in all, it’s good so don’t go losing your hair over it (get it? That’s what Alopecia is!)
Take a listen to: A Sky for Shoeing Horses Under !

Once again, start some dialogue.

Warm and Fuzzy Is So In

A Faulty Chromosome - As An Ex-Anorexic's Six Sicks Exit

A Faulty Chromosome is cashing in on the trend of lo-fi distortion with their self-released album, “as an ex-anorexic’s six sicks exit… “. They entered the scene with quite charming and still upbeat album with songs discussing their frustration with the world. They are doing the typical 20-somethings trying to figure out what’s up with the world.

Even though they play with after-effects like reverb and distortion they also throw in some fun that lightens up the muddy sound that accompanies that editing. With 8-bit blips, hand-claps, tremolo and drum machine’d beats, the album does a flip from being a bummer to a very warm and nostalgic.

Once again, check it out, start a discussion.
